- Installation Notes
- ==================
-
-
- 1. Unzip file in c:\
-
- The zip file will unpack and make the necessary directories.
-
- 2. After unzipping the file you should have a directory called
- Backup under your c:\Drive. This is the directory where your backup files
- are stored.
- Under the Backup directory you should have two (2) directories: Log
- and Program. Log directory contains the backup log. Program directory
- contains the necessary programs that do the work.
-
- 3. In Explorer: Make a shortcut for the file named Backup.exe
- You can place this on your Desktop or you can put it in your startup
- group, whatever you are most comfortable with.
-
- Note:
- This program assumes that your win95 directory is called Windows.
- If it is called something else like Windows95 or Win95 then this program WILL NOT WORK.
- Delete it from your drive.
-
- 4. Making a Backup
- ==================
- Start the program and follow the directions.
- It will copy all of the most important system files into the Backup
- directory.
- Personally, I like to make my backup just before I shut down windows.
- This way I know if Windows95 has been behaving properly and then I
- have a good copy of the system files.
- If you load a lot of software you could make a backup before you
- load your software in case it makes some adverse changes to your
- system.
-
- 5. Restoring from Backup
- ========================
- Okay, something has gone wrong with windows and it is not loading
- properly.
- Start your computer and hold down the F8 key.
- Boot into Dos or boot from your floppy disk. (you did make a boot disk?)
- Type: C:\backup\program\restore <enter>
- After it copies your backup files over the defective ones it will
- automatically reboot your system.
- Windows should then restart with all information to the time of your
- last backup.
- NOTE:
- As a safety precaution the backup program renames the system.dat and the
- user.dat that are in the backup directory to system.xxx and user.xxx.
- Of course, you will only notice these two files after you have made more
- than one backup.
- By doing this it provides an extra bit of insurance. These files are
- copies of your previous backup. To restore these files I have included
- Previous.com. This file is only for restoring these two files to the Windows
- directory. This should reset your registry to the time before your last backup.
- Use this only as a last resort. To do this go to the C:\ prompt under dos
- and type C:\backup\program\previous <enter>
-
- 6. Backup Log
- =============
- After a backup up has been completed it will write the time and date of
- the backup to the backup.log file stored in the Log directory.
- You can use this to see when your last backup was made.
- The Windows Explorer will date stamp the file so you can just look at
- the file date.
- In Dos type: cd c:\backup\log <enter>
- Type: type backup.log <enter>
- The last date displayed will be the date of your last backup.
-
- Note: Eventually the log file will start getting quite large. If you
- wish to empty it do it from windows by opening it in Notepad and
- deleting the contents (except for the very first line) and then
- save the file.
-
- 7. Additional Information
- =========================
-
-
- As the interface is written in 32 bit Visual Basic you will need the VB4
- runtime library to run this program. It is not included with this zip file.
-
- This program was written on a AMD486 DX133 system and has been tested on an
- Intel 120 Pentium system with good results.
-
- Personal Note
- =============
-
- I have been running Win95 from the time of its last beta to the current
- release and have added most of the new updates from Microsoft(T).
- I have found that it is a great leap forward from Win 3.1 and WFWG.
- Of course, nothing is ever perfect, but Microsoft has done a very
- commendable job with Win95 (especially when you consider the
- thousands of different configurations it must adapt to).
- It does have a remarkable ability to recover from many disasters.
- I find that things start to go wrong when people load and try out
- a lot of new software/shareware.
- My answer to that is this: If a piece of software causes me problems
- I get rid of it off my system. Of course, if it is something I really need
- then I like to track down the problem.
-
-
- 8. This is Shareware
- ====================
-
- Okay, so this isn't a huge sophisticated program that takes hours to
- download and has all the fancy buttons and gizmos and whizbang interfaces
- but if it saves your bacon once then it is worth it, right!
- So here is the deal:
- If you like it and if it works for you then send me five bucks OR the
- equivalent in your currency. New paper money preferred.
- (Yes, I'm a collector).
